Medical development has greatly improved the prevention and treatment of cancer, but medications for cancer still face many unmet medical needs. Both Chinese and Western medicine have experienced a long history of understanding cancer. On the one hand, there are various treatment regimens and continually updated medications in cancer management. On the other hand, new drug discovery from small molecules to large molecules, from single pure compounds to multiple components provides a lot of opportunities, but the research becomes more and more difficult. Nowadays, Chinese Medicine is still used in clinical settings for cancer prevention and treatment in greater China and many Asian countries or used as a supplement and functional food. It is widely accepted that Chinese medicine plays an important role in cancer clinical management by enhancing whole body situation and improving quality of life, reducing adverse effects of Western medicine treatment, preventing recurrence and metastasis, as well as use for palliative care of cancer. Does it work? With Chinese medicine's rich history of more than 2000 years, how to meet medical needs and contribute to new drug discovery or provide new treatment strategies with strong evidence is a modern challenge. Research methodology and evaluation in Chinese Medicine is also a big challenge. This presentation will look at the dilemma of drug development and clinical treatment strategy and combine my basic and clinical research in cancer to discuss the challenges and solutions.
