Alleged consular staff attempted to take away posters and banners that demonstrators had hung up taunting the Chinese president, Xi Jinping. One of the demonstrators, Bob Chan, who attempted to retrieve a poster, was dragged into the consular compound and was beaten by unidentified men. The Labour MP David Lammy, the shadow foreign secretary, condemned the violence. He said: 'The UK stands for freedom, the rule of law and democracy. The quashing of peaceful protest will never be tolerated on our streets'

Assault on protester in Manchester is seen as being consistent with Beijing’s hawkish rhetoric of recent years
A shocking attack on a pro-democracy protester who was dragged inside the Chinese consulate in Manchester and beaten, allegedly by consular staff, was a manifestation of China’s increasingly aggressive foreign policy, according to analysts.
On Sunday, the day the Chinese Communist party’s 20th congress opened in Beijing, a small group of Hong Kong protesters . Images from the attack circulating on social media show a grey-haired man holding one protester by his hair just inside the consulate gates, as other men attack him. The man had previously emerged from the consulate and demanded the removal of satirical posters of the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and torn down a protest banner.

The UK foreign secretary, James Cleverly, is facing demands to act against the Chinese government as police confirmed that a man was assaulted after being dragged into the grounds of the country’s consulate in Manchester.
Labour and senior Tories have called for the Chinese ambassador to explain what happened after footage appeared to show a pro-democracy demonstrator being beaten and kicked by several men. Police said the assailants had emerged from the consular building.
